Lords of the SAMURAI Asian Art Museum
200 Larkin Street
San Francisco http://www.asianart.org
Brilliant warriors. Artistic masters. Enter the world of the samurai, and learn what it takes to balance the precision of the blade with the perfection of the brush stroke. More than just professional soldiers, samurai of the highest rank were visionaries, writers, and artists.
Drawn from the collection of the Hosokawa family -- a clan with a 600-year-old lineage -- Lords of the Samurai gives you a personal introduction to samurai culture. Let superb examples of armor, swords, paintings, lacquerware, masks, and musical instruments transport you to a time of honor and perfection.
The exhibition features more than 160 works from the family collection housed in the Eisei-Bunko Museum in Tokyo, the Kumamoto Castle, and the Kumamoto Municipal Museum in Kyushu. The Asian Art Museum is the exclusive US venue for this exhibition.
